Encounter in Svendborg. Searching for Memory
Moving image, mixed media, 2003
It is June 22, 1938: Walter Benjamin returns to Svendborg, Bertolt Brecht's Danish exile, for the second time since 1934. Benjamin stays in a room in the neighborhood, remains in Denmark for the entire summer and does not leave again until mid-October.
Encounter in Svendborg 1938 - Searching for Memory is based on a montage of photographs taken in the garden of Skovsbostrand, the home of Helene Weigel and Bertolt Brecht at the time.
Under the authentic archive material lined a film sequence shot in the same setting in the summer of 2004. The photomontage is like a layer on the film and allows the movement to penetrate the surface at various points in changing and varying intensity. The moving image is accompanied by the sounds of nature.
