Goethe’s Study. Interior III
Room installation, 1994

The furniture and objects in Goethe's study are appropriate to the time, yet functional and unpretentious. They suggest a "this-is-how-it-was", but removed from the context associated with the person Goethe and the place, they would lose their significance.
As a viewer of museum-like spaces that serve cultural memory, you are supposed to be able to imagine a time in which you did not live. The staged objects act as silent witnesses and are charged with symbolism: we encounter those things in their supposedly original purpose and are frozen in it. They stand there - functionally - and yet they have been.
